The Town of Midland is home to 30 historical murals located within the downtown and waterfront area. As part of its commitment to public art and town beautification, the Town is contracting mural artists to restore, reenvision and recreate some of these murals. Murals painted directly onto a building's exterior of brick or stucco will be restored during the summer and fall due to the outdoor nature of the project.  Murals originally painted onto crezon marine plywood may be restore, depending on the condition of the plywood, or they might be reenvisioned or be re-created onto alupanel. As the Town does not have studio space, any projects using new alupanels will need to be completed within studio space organized by the artist.

Additional murals may be added to the list and updates will be posted at www.midland.ca with appropriate deadlines. Artists are encouraged to follow @MidlandTourism on Facebook and Instagram for additional calls for artists. The cost of any required masonry work will be completed at the expense of the property owner and the cost of such repairs should not be included in the artist's quote.

Questions regarding this call may be directed to tourism@midland.ca and responses will be sent directly to the artist as well as posted on the Town of Midland's website.

The list of current mural projects is listed in the below application. If an artist is interested in a specific mural, they will need to provide, in the appropriate field box, a proposal and quote indicating:

  • Artist fees
  • Cost for materials and supplies (excluding the cost of alupanel if recreating the mural, the Town will purchase alupanels).
  • Rental of any specialize equipment (scaffold, scissor lift).
  • Estimated timeline to complete the restoration.
  • Plan to mitigate impact of restoration and access to building entrance(s) during restoration and regular business hours, if warranted by position of mural.

Selected artists will be required to:

  • Provide proof of insurance listing the Town of Midland and property owner as additional insured
  • Provide proof of WSIB coverage or documentation of why WSIB coverage is not applicable
  • Proof of at-heights training organizing, depending on the mural(s) they are working on.
  • Secure their own accommodations, transportation, meals and PPE, as well as associated costs. The cost for accommodations for out-of-town artists may be included in the quote, but please indicate it separately from the cost of mural restoration/recreation.

Questions regarding this project should be directed to tourism@midland.ca.
